Thakur, an IG-rank officer, was suspended by the UP government on July 13 on charges of indiscipline.
The Lokayukta on Tuesday registered a case of amassing properties
disproportionate to his known sources of income and misusing official
position against suspended IPS officer Amitabh Thakur.
N K Mehrotra, who registered the case on the basis of a complaint
filed by RTI activist Sanjay Sharma, said Thakur has been asked to file
his reply by August 6. The Lokayukta has also sought details of Thakur’s
properties from the state appointment and personnel department.
“Sharma has also filed a supplementary complaint, in which he has
alleged that Thakur has acquired two properties in Lucknow’s Bhainswara
and Khargapur in his mother’s name. He added that two properties in
Khargapur and Tiwaripur near Janakipuram were acquired by Thakur’s wife
Nutan, a social activist,” said Mehrotra.
In his main complaint, Sharma has alleged that while Thakur has two
properties in his name, Nutan has nine properties in Bihar and Lucknow,
which are disproportionate to their known sources of income. He has
further alleged that the couple have invested black money in a
construction project and are using his four NGOs for the purpose.
Sharma has alleged that though he is a public servant, Thakur has
stakes in NGOs, which he is not allowed to. When asked, Mehrotra said he
is yet to find out whether public servants are allowed to be part of
NGOs.
On July 23, Thakur had met Mehrotra and submitted details of his
properties. He had claimed that Sharma had levelled such allegations on
someone’s direction and requested the Lokayukta to take action against
the complainant as per UP Lokayukta Act, if his claims were found to be
false.
Thakur, an IG-rank officer, was suspended by the UP government on
July 13 on charges of indiscipline. The decision came a few days after
Thakur had lodged a complaint with the police, claiming he was
threatened by Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. His wife had
also made public the audio clip containing the purported conversation.
Sharma, meanwhile, has claimed that his complaints were based on the replies that he had received as part of his RTI queries.
